That moment when you search your pockets, wallet, bag, and your heart sinks: the DNI is not there. Losing the National Identity Document is one of the most stressful situations there is. Besides being your main identification, it is the key to countless procedures. But before you panic, take a deep breath. It’s not the end of the world, and there is a clear action plan to resolve this.

In this emergency guide, we will guide you step by step, from the first safety action to how to request your duplicate (second copy) quickly and efficiently. Follow these instructions, and you will have your new lost DNI back in your hands before you know it.

Step 1 (The Most Important): File a Loss Report

Even before thinking about requesting a new one, your first step should be to register the loss. This is called "Report for Loss" or "Exposición por Extravío".

Why is this crucial? The report creates an official record that your document is no longer with you. This legally protects you in case someone finds it and tries to use it in bad faith to commit fraud in your name. It’s your insurance policy.

  • Where to do it: You can file the report at the nearest police station (Comisaría).
  • What to bring: Just another document that can identify you, if you have one (like a driver's license), but the most important thing is to know your DNI number.

Step 2: How to Request the 2nd Copy (Duplicate) of Your DNI

With the report in hand (or its number), the process to request a new copy is very similar to a regular renewal.

  1. Schedule Your Appointment Online: Access the "Mi Argentina" app or the government website to schedule an appointment. In the list of procedures, choose the option corresponding to "Nuevo Ejemplar por robo, pérdida o deterioro" (New Copy due to theft, loss, or deterioration).
  2. Attend the Documentation Center: On the scheduled day and time, go to the chosen Renaper office.
  3. Present the Report: Bring the proof of the loss report. This speeds up the process.
  4. Pay the Fee: The cost for issuing a duplicate is the same as a regular renewal ($3,000 pesos, reference value).

Attention: Can’t use DNI Express?

Yes, you can! If you need your new document urgently, the DNI Express service is also available for loss cases. Just follow the steps in our specific guide on urgent procedures after filing the report.

And While the New DNI Doesn’t Arrive?

After completing the procedure, you will receive a receipt called "Constancia de DNI en trámite". This paper is your provisional identification. It does not serve for everything (you cannot leave the country with it, for example), but it is valid for most everyday situations within Argentina until your new card arrives by mail.

I Found My Old DNI After Requesting a New One. What Should I Do?

This happens! If you find your old DNI after you have already initiated the procedure for the second copy, know that the old document has completely lost its legal validity. From the moment a new copy is requested, the previous one is considered canceled in the Renaper system. To avoid confusion, it is best to destroy it as soon as the new one arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Does the number of my DNI change when I request a second copy?

No. Your DNI number is unique and lifelong. What changes is the letter of the Exemplar, which indicates how many times the card has been issued to you.

2. I lost my DNI, but I have the Digital DNI on my phone. Do I need to request a new physical card?

Yes, it is highly recommended. Although the Digital DNI is valid for many procedures, the physical card is still mandatory for voting and for travel abroad. Furthermore, if you need to reinstall the app in the future, you will need the code from the physical card to reactivate the digital version.

3. Can I travel by plane within Argentina with the 'DNI en trámite' receipt?

Yes. For cabotage flights, the Constancia de DNI en trámite issued by Renaper is accepted as a valid boarding document, according to ANAC Argentina regulations.

4. What is the difference between 'duplicated', 'triplicated', etc.?

They are just the names given to the different versions of your document. 'Duplicate' is the second issuance, 'triplicate' is the third, and so on. In practice, the process to request all of them is the same.
